Nearly 13,000 homes were destroyed in the Abaco Islands, the area of the Atlantic archipelago of the Bahamas, after suffering the force of Hurricane Dorian on its way to the east coast of the United States, Red Cross officials said Monday.

The Red Cross also believes that the monumental floods that were recorded during the day on Sunday in the Abaco Islands could also cause contamination of the water purification plants of those small islands of the Atlantic archipelago, said the international news agency, EFE.

Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis reported Monday at a press conference that at least five people died in the Abaco due to Hurricane Dorian, a provisional figure until the system leaves the region, this Tuesday and Wednesday.

Although Minnis gave that figure as valid, information that comes from the Abacus speaks of the fact that the bodies of multiple people floating in different areas of that small group of islands are visible.

The information has not been validated, however, by the Nassau authorities, whose prime minister was clear in stating that, for now, there are five dead, although the suspicion is that the figure will increase considerably.
