A total of 13,110 Venezuelan migrants crossed the border into Ecuador between Saturday and Sunday, taking advantage of the last hours before the entry into force of the special humanitarian visa.
Official figures from the Ministry of Government detailed that the largest flow was registered by Rumichaca, where 11,013 people went through.
The rest was done through the San Miguel border bridge, located on the Amazonian border with Colombia, where 1,294 migrants did it, and through Huaquillas, on the border with Peru, which gave access to 803, according to Efe.
The growing flow of Venezuelan migrants to Ecuador this weekend is due to the requirement that a special humanitarian visa for Venezuelans seeking to move to Ecuadorian territory entered into force from midnight on Monday.
The measure stipulates that the citizens of Venezuela must submit a prior application for this type of visa before arriving at the border, which they can make at the virtual consulates of Caracas, Bogotá and Lima.
To this procedure is added the payment of 50 dollars in negotiations and a face-to-face interview in those consulates.
