G7 will contribute $ 22 million to the Amazon but Bolsonaro questions it

The G7 agreed to contribute 20 million euros to combat the Amazon fires. It is equivalent to 22 million dollars that will be used mainly to send water bomber planes, French President Enmanuel Macron announced next Monday with his Chilean counterpart Sebastián Piñera.

The initiative was announced after the session of the G7 summit where the situation facing the Amazon rainforest was addressed. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, who has refused to rule against the climate emergency did not participate in the meeting.

This will be a first stage in the collaboration plan, Macron said. He also said that France will offer military means for fire control tasks.

In addition to sending an air fleet, the G7 decided on a medium-term aid plan for reforestation. The plan will be presented to the UN General Assembly at the end of September. But to carry it out, the Brazil agreement and a work with NGOs and local populations will be necessary.

Bolsonaro’s message
After Enmanuel Macron prioritized the situation of the Amazon in the meeting, his Brazilian counterpart criticized him. Jair Bolsonaro questioned the viability of international aid.

«We cannot accept that a president, Macron, fires free attacks on the Amazon, nor disguises his intentions behind the idea of an ‘alliance’ of the G7 countries to ‘save’ the Amazon, as if we were a colony or a No man’s land, ”he wrote on Twitter.

The Infobae portal said that in statements to the press from Brasilia, Bolsonaro added suspiciously: «Macron promises help from the rich countries to the Amazon. Does anyone help someone without asking for anything in return? Who is watching the Amazon? What do they want there?
